Finnigan sings a story of a rocky relationship that pushes him and his lover to take things into their own hands. When the emotional part of a relationship is broken, the physical part can suffer. Self satisfaction is the subject matter and Finnigan doesn’t hold back. The B-side features a brand new bonus cut from the original ‘A Lover Was Born’ recording sessions. Written by Memphis soul legend Charles Chalmers in the mid 60’s, “Hurts Me So Much” by Barbara & The Browns on Stax records is the north star of this arousing track. Built off a minor chord 6/8 11 feel, tremolo guitar and piano rolls counterpoint each other while moody horns are highlighted by gospel tinged background vocals. The story of a love that couldn’t be has Kelly singing his woes and pleading about the pain he feels.
